Definition Of Actinomycosis
Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection that causes abscesses (collections of pus) in the abdominal cavity, in the jaw (cervicofacial), in the lungs (thoracic), or throughout the body (generalized). This condition can be treated, so contact your doctor if you think you may have actinomycosis.
Actinomycosis Causes
Most often, actinomycosis is caused by infection with the bacteria, Actinomyces israelii, which is present in the gums, teeth, and tonsils.
Actinomycosis Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition. The following factors increase your chance of developing actinomycosis. If you have any of these risk factors, tell your doctor:
- Tooth disease
- Trauma
- Aspiration (entry of liquids or solids into the lungs)
What Are Symptoms Of Actinomycosis?
If you experience any of these symptoms, do not assume it is due to actinomycosis. These symptoms could be caused by other, less serious health conditions. If you experience any of them, see your doctor.
- Pain
- Fever
- Threw up
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Weightloss
- Pus secretion through the skin
- Small, flat, hard, and sometimes painful swellings around the mouth, neck, or jaw, which may drain pus
- Cough that produces sputum
How Is Actinomycosis Diagnosed?
Your doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history and perform a physical exam. Tests could include the following:
- Analysis of pus, sputum, or tissue
- X-rays
Actinomycosis Treatment
Talk to your doctor about the best treatment plan for you. Treatment options include the following:
Medicines
High doses of antibiotics are used to treat actinomycosis.
Abscess drainage
Your doctor will drain abscesses that contain pus.
Actinomycosis Prevention
The best way to reduce your chances of developing actinomycosis is to prevent dental disease by practicing good dental hygiene and seeing your dentist regularly. Good dental hygiene includes:
- Brush your teeth twice a day
- Floss daily
- Replace your toothbrush regularly
